Evilicious Diva: Gone with the Wind
6 months and I haven’t missed a training yet and it’s all in the hope that one day I’ll be awesome on my skates or I can die trying. To me life is all about challenging yourself if you don’t challenge yourself life just gets boring.
Last year I ran my first ever half marathon crossing that finish line was the biggest achievement ever for me because I’m the type of girl that cant run 2 minutes down the road without getting the stitch or gasping for air. So after completing something I thought I’d never do I was ready for my next challenge. Reading an article about Richter City Roller Derby, a group of Wellington girls who started a Wellington roller derby league I knew this was something I definitely wanted to be apart of.
So I strapped on the old faithful skates that I hired from upper hutt, which had probably seen more feet then a podiatrist with a foot fetish. After my first experience on skates in about 18 years I was quite impressed that I managed to stay on both feet the whole time. Its amazing how quickly it comes back to you guess its like riding a bike, its something you never forget.
In my quest to improve my skating skills I would keep my skates in the boot of my car and go for lunchtime skates, one of the many perks of working on Oriental Parade. Just one tip I would give to beginners is maybe check the wind report before you go I leant that one the hard way I still hadn’t perfected my stops and made good use of a bench when the wind took a hold of me it blew me right into the bench and needless to say I ended up going tits over arse. It’s even more mortifying when people actually see you do it, you know what it’s like when you see someone fall over it’s human reaction to laugh. So now I only go skating outside on those calm wellington days which lately hasn’t been that often I’m just lucky that league training is twice a week with an extra skate on a Tuesday so I manage to get my skating fix in each week. I’ve now learnt when you fall down you just pick yourself back up again.
I remember as a child Id give anything a go I use to love the thrill and adrenalin from doing something that scared the be Jesus out of me but now in my late 20s I play it safe I’m scared to do those things that scare me and derby is helping me release that no fear kid in me again and I frikin LOVE IT.
