About Us
Richter City Roller Derby was established in 2007 by a group of women who decided that Wellington needed a piece of the international roller derby revival.
After nearly two years of hard work recruiting, training and fundraising, Richter City was launched onto the Wellington sports calendar in March 2009 with its first exhibition bout “The Grudgemaker” at the Wellington Basketball Association.
RCRD quickly outgrew its initial venue, shifting to the TSB Bank Arena to complete its first competitive season, as well as hosting New Zealand’s first inter-city roller derby bout “Skate Highway One” in December against Auckland’s Pirate City Rollers.
In total over 4000 tickets were sold for roller derby bouts in Wellington in 2009, demonstrating the growing appetite for a new kind of sport. Wellingtonians of all walks of life turn out to support RCRD - women of real shapes and sizes who give new life to the sport of roller derby.
2010 is set to be another big year for RCRD. The league is growing, with more than 20 new skaters recently graduated from the “freshmeat” training programme. This coming year promises a fierce three game season between home teams Brutal Pageant and Smash Malice, followed by more high stakes inter-city action later in the year.
