stuck in the grey..

By rocket queen - Posted on 15 October 2009

so it's halfway through the afternoon and i have a bad case of the Meh (see http://forum.londonrollergirls.com/viewtopic.php?f=52&t=9516 ) it's four hours till team training. three weeks out from the season decider bout between Smash Malice and us. Somewhere in the back of my mind i am shitting myself and amping to gogogogogogo!! but for some reason my biggest impulse today is to go back to bed and read about the Ocktober 17 revolution. Or anything that involves being back under the duvet.

< insert break to make hot cup of milo here >

but if i can just manage to throw my gear in the car and head down into the city to meet the girls, somehow, magically, everything changes and i'll emerge like some "Stars in their Eyes" contestant smiling, laughing, full of energy and optimism about life, the universe and just about everything!

please excuse me for this horrendous cheese-stick moment. most of my closest friends (especially my pre-derby ones) will tell you i don't usually have the brightest view of the world. i used to be cynical, bitter even. god knows i'd never have been seen dead with a group of giggling happy hugging GIRLS (let alone ones dressed in frilly pink things..) grrls, women, ladies were just not creatures i often encountered - and certainly not voluntarily..

but then i got bit. bad. by DERBY. it CHANGED me. i met these women. and i LIKED them. and they liked me! derby made me HAPPY. it was like some wierd drug-induced euphoria that lasted for hours after training, and i couldn't wait to get my next fix. i was getting out all that pent-up aggression at the world on the track, and coming out laughing instead of hungover. and the more i indulged, the healthier i got.

i've been skating with Richter City Roller Derby for a year now, and every time i put my skates on (or go to a meeting even!) i still get the same feeling. the only time i don't is when i can't skate.. this cynical goth/bogan has even been coaxed into wearing pink and red frills in front of large crowds every now and again ;)

and see, now i've typed myself out of my Meh. i'm off to crank some G'n'R on the stereo and change my wheels to outdoor set in the hope that the weather will hold.

Thanks Derby!
